I was fortunate enough to run with this thing.

Torch

The first question most people ask when they hear about this is, "How'd you do THAT?!"  And they're right in their line of thinking, which is that when you hear about torch-bearers, they were people who saved puppies from fires or raised 20 orphans as their own.

Not me.  :)

I was in the right place at the right time, working for a radio station.  Truth is, many of the people who get to run with the torch are picked by corporations. But  then again, I use the term "picked" loosely.  For my story, a local Chevy dealer who was advertising with our station had somehow had a spot left to fill.  My boss (who had first right of refusal and in retrospect was a bit shy) asked me if I wanted it.  Right place, right time, right?

The enormity of being a part of this process was not lost on me. It was really one of the coolest things I've ever done.  I was four months pregnant and ran for .2 miles.

Last night we watched the opening ceremonies. At the end, when the Chinese athlete ran around the stadium to light the big flame, Casey burst out, "You should go get your torch!"  We laughed and thought about how funny it would if right at that very moment, I put on my official Salt Lake City torch-bearer jumpsuit, hoisted the torch, and ran around our block. I briefly toyed with idea of running it over to my neighbors house and making her laugh as the real flame was lit in Beijing, but then we realized we were watching the whole thing on Tivo, and they were probably asleep by now.   I did get my torch out, though, and I started thinking again about the whole thing and how it's pretty darn surreal that I have this torch in my closet.

That day in 2002, we started on a bus on the south side of Santa Barbara after the flame had been transported up from Los Angeles.  Basically, you would get out of the van, run for bit, pass off the flame, and get back in van.  We were on the van for quite a while waiting for the flame to arrive, and we all began sharing our stories of how we got to be there.  This is where I realized many of the runners were somehow connected to Coca Cola, or, like myself, Chevrolet.   The only person's face and story I remember from that bus, though, was a pregnant woman. When the circle finally made it way to her to tell how she ended up there, she stood up, looking so big she could have given birth any minute, and simply said, "My husband was on flight 93."   This being only a few months after 9/11, no one had to tell us, that was the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania.  It was then that I truly "Got it."  I'd never grasped the enormity of the Olympic spirit before then.  That this grand spectacle we go through every two years full of display and fanfare and ceremony was so much bigger than any of us, and so beautiful.   When it was finally my turn and I stepped out of the van, I was sobbing.  Thankfully, my sister was standing right there with a camera crying too, and we both started to laugh and cry together.  There were cameras everywhere and people cheering, and I was a PART of it.

I look back and laugh now, because at the time, I was so afraid of not being able to run for 1/5 of a mile.  Being four months pregnant and a complete couch potato, I thought I'd collapse!  But it all went by so fast, in hindsight, with the adrenaline, I could have ran 4 miles!

Thankfully, I bought the torch. Oh yeah, that was another part of it, if you were more of a "place holder" torchbearer, Chevy wasn't picking up the tab for a torch. So, at a time when Casey and I could hardly afford our rent, I spent $350 on the torch I ran with.  And although I couldn't afford/justify the wooden display that went with it, I pull the torch out of a broom closet every so often, dust it off, and remember that it was the best $350 I ever spent, and how lucky I am that I was in the right place, at the right time.

Finally some rain!

We had a quick downpour today, but we made the most of it!   We were having fun running around and playing, and then I remembered a friend of mine who has a cool picture of her daughter in the rain. It hangs prominently in her kitchen- and she was telling me how it's not that it's a great picture, per se, or that its HER daughter, but that she likes to look at it to remind her about being carefree and just letting yourself dance in the rain.  So... I immediately grabbed my camera and got one for me to enjoy as well.  My daughter- carefree.

Rain
Im really enjoying this black and white style... There wasn't much color out there in the grey rain, so I switched it up.

And then of course, the crew.

The dogs were having fun as well!  Although my little Eddie took refuge in the fern when it started to thunder...  I was bummed I couldn't get closer, but I wasn't about to risk ruining my camera in the rain for a DOG shot. :)

Fancy Shmancy!

Whew! What a month! Seems like Im finally just getting back to the part of the photography business I love: PHOTOGRAPHING. ha!

These two boys are such handsome guys, they made my job easier (look at the baby blues!) It didn't hurt that they were in tuxes either! :)  The younger one, L, was escorting his longtime friend to the Miss Teen Texas pageant in Downtown Dallas. Still no word on whether she'll be the ultimate Texas representative for Miss Teen USA, but I think the smile on his face lasted all weekend nonetheless. Although, he KNEW he looked handsome without smiling, too!
Special kudos too, to these guys.  It was about 100 degrees when we shot the outside pictures, and Mrs. K insisted they wear the jackets!  And they did! Well, for many of em anyway. (I really liked the white shirts poking out!) And how awesome are their TIES?! Real men wear pink! (and Baby blue!)

And as much as I HATED the lighting inside the hotel- it allowed me to play around with the exposure quite a bit. I think this next one looks COOL!

Candy Helps.

This was from a recent shoot- I think this was the ONE time the little one looked at me. She was SO busy doing her own thing. This was probably the hardest shoot I've ever had- I forgot how hard toddlers are to control, especially with two siblings who are exploring as well! Reese's pieces got us (mom and I) through this! :)

Sweet Feet

I had a shoot this morning for three adorable kids.  I wanted to show you the shoes mom dressed the middle girl in.. SO CUTE!

The best part is, she MAKES the sandals herself and has a business called Sugar Plum Couture where she sells them.. Put me down for a pair! Or two!

My Nieces.

Kiss

So you know how when you get together it's hard to take pictures? Well, it's doubly hard when you are trying to organize 6 kids and a pregnant mom.  Realizing we hadn't taken ANY shots (except with our iphones) I took the girls outside into my garage as they were leaving.  It was no fuss and fast and furious!  They were so much fun... and they get another sibling in October!! WOO HOOO!!!!

I love Guests.

What a week! My sister just left Monday... :(... she was here for a week with her family.  Three little girls, a cheerful husband, and a pregnant belly.  (she is only about halfway through he pregnancy, though, so we didn't do belly shots!)                 (..... That sounds like a late night bar game!)

We filled our week up with great dinners, (mostly cooked by George, my brother in law,) and a few courageous 6 kid excursions. One of the "highlights" was a Medieval Times trip. Sort of a right of passage, I guess. And believe me... you ONLY have to do this once in your life. It would have been horrible if it wasn't so darned FUNNY.   My sister and I literally cried laughing throughout much of the show.  If it wasn't greasy long haired knights, it was horses doing the grapevine, or us eating what looked like a McDonald's apple pie.  COM.  E.  DY.

The other outing was a girls only lunch at the new American Girl store in Dallas. We "fed the beast," so to speak, and bought many trinkets as well.  Of course, Sayde's birthday is next month and she now wants the American Girl of the Year for 2008, Mia

Mia is $90. And if you want all the CLOTHES, she's $168.   Gasp!

(maybe a sheltered life in Hawaii wasn't so bad after all?)

Here's Sayde and Audrey with their dolls they brought to lunch, and then Hazel making sure her borrowed friend, Kit,  knows what's on the menu.

Go Go Gadget Girl

Im not sure what fuels my desire, but I really am a gadget girl. Maybe I'm just simply an (over)avid consumer, but I like to think I'm sorta... oh I don't know... tecchie?  Did I even spell that right?

Example: Im a photographer. So when, say, a new camera comes out, Im foaming at the mouth.  Costing as much as they do, though, I have to have a DARNED good reason for replacing what I have. So, Since i have only about 2 reasons to upgrade to the Nikon D3, and one of them is, "It's flippin awesome!" it's not happening anytime soon.  Actually, I'll probably wait to see what Nikon comes out with that REPLACES the D3 (even more gadgety!)... but that's a ways down the road.

That said, here's my new baby.... or should I call her "ibaby?"
Picture 9

We're still getting acquainted, but I think I'm in love.  NOW, I need to figure out how I'll break the news to her that the scratched up ol' iphone she's been cradling up to the last few days will be moving on when his new 3G cousin comes out in July? :)

I think I have a disease.

On the bright side, My kids are now proud owners of a sorta cool, albeit older, MacBook Pro

Oh, and did you see the new lens Nikon came out with....? Ay yai yai.

Possibly the best backyard ever.

At the very least, the best pool! (**disclaimer** A very uninformed theory as I, of course, have not seen everyone's pool.)  This family is awesome. Great people, great kids, grounded, the whole nine yards, and they have an amazing home. Well, I don't know for sure because I've never actually had a tour of the house. Every time I've photographed them we just go straight to the backyard!  This picture just doesn't do it justice, but if you can imagine that the picture shows only a bit of the huge rock formation that makes up their pool, spa, tide pool-esque thingies, waterfalls, gardens.... its so gorgeous!  They're sitting on a rock that creates a bridge over the back of the pool, right behind them is a cavey cove..... Heaven. And a PERFECT place for a family picture.......

This was coincidentally Mr. and Mrs. S's 16th wedding anniversary, but actually, she had me come out to do some family photos for her father.  He's starting chemotherapy this week and she wanted to have some pictures done before the treatment.  He and his lovely bride were a treat to photograph that day as well.

Can't wait to take some pictures of a cancer free/post chemo grandpa down the road!

I'm a sellout...so?!

To be fair, I'm being a sellout to myself, actually. When you are a photographer, or any type of artist, for that matter, there are things you know you like, and things you know you don't like.

Things I like: Super close ups. Narrow depth of field. SHARP SHARP focus. Bright colors or super contrast black and whites. (So contrasty that a picture of my kids that I sent to my Dad on the east coast prompted him to comment on how dark their hair had all become. :)

Things I don't like: soft focus (a la barbara walters.) Lakes with white shirts and blue jeans. Spot color on black and whites (think, black and white photo of a kid in a bowler hat smelling a flower, where theflower is bright red.)

It is with this last "don't like" that I am struggling with.  I took a picture last week that just SCREAMED spot color.  So I did  it.  And I LIKE it.

So fine.  Cal me a sellout, Holly Paulson! Just don't expect many more of these... :)
